'Bamboo' bomb recovered, bunkers destroyed

Imphal, November 22 2023: Along with recovering arms and ammunition, including a local-made bamboo bomb, some bunkers were destroyed during search operations conducted by combined teams of state and central forces in different parts of the state on Wednesday.

According to police report, search operation was conducted by a combined team of Kakching district commandos and Kakching police at Kakching Moramba Chingjol from 4 am to 6:15 am on Wednesday during which two number .36 hand grenades and a Japan-made six-round revolver were recovered from near an apple farm.

The recovered items have been handed over to the Kakching police station.

Another combined team of Imphal East district police, personnel of 20 JAT, CRPF 216 Bn, and BSF (E Coy 119 Bn) also conducted search operations at Sabungkhok Khunou, Shanti Khongbal and Phaimol hill range near Thamnapokpi village from 9:30 am till 1 pm on Wednesday.

Though no arm or ammunition was recovered, five bunkers found set up along Phaimol hill range near Thamnapokpi village ahd two other bunkers at Shanti Khongbal were destroyed by the security forces.

Meanwhile, Assam Rifles and Manipur police launched a joint operation in general area of L Cananphai village in Churachandpur district based on specific intelligence, and recovered a huge cache of weapons and ammunition.

According to PRO IGAR (S), the joint team recovered 12 weapons including two 7.62 mm SLR rifles, one Ml Assault Rifle with one magazine, one 9mm Pistol with magazine (country made), one single barrel rifle, seven improvised mortars, 15 improvised bombs, one local made bamboo bomb and other stores.

The recovered items have been handed over to Sangaikot police station for further investigations, the PRO added.

However, sources informed that the seized weapons included 38 rounds of 7.62 mm including eight Sniper ammunition, 10 rounds of 7.62 M16, five rounds each of AK-47 and 5.56 mm INSAS, 10 rounds of US-made 9 mm, 4.175 kg of gun powder and 42 electric detonators.
