Imphal, November 11 2023:
Even though the state government has been restricting internet services to curb spread of fake news and false propaganda that could exacerbate the ethnic violence that broke out on May 3, several social media accounts handled by Kuki-Zo elements continue to propagate propagandas and false narratives.
After a video of police handing over an apparently mentally unsound man to his family, who was found cycling towards Kotlen village along NH-37 which is an adjoining area between Imphal West and Kangpokpi districts, went viral on social media on Saturday, a Facebook account named Zo Highlanders' on its Facebook post wrote; "Arambai Tenggol brutally killed captured Zo-people while captured Arambai Tenggol member with 9 mm pistol at S Kotlen was safely released.
Such humanity act of kindness is the strength of the Zo ethnic tribes", implying that the Kuki-Zo community is humane and sympathetic even to people belonging the ethnic rival.
Eramdam E-pao, India Today, Amit Shah, N Biren Singh, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Ukhrul Times, Narendra Modi and Manipur News Update among others were tagged on the post uploaded by the Zo Highlanders along with the photos of the person and a 9mm pistol with ammunition.
When The People's Chronicle fact-checked the post, it came to light that photos of the gun and ammunition were that of PS Prices.com' .
The fact of the incident is that a mentally unsound man who probably got lost was found pedalling towards Kuki village Kotlen by security personnel.
When enquired where he was heading, the security personnel knew that he was mentally unsound and was later handed over to their family members.
