Union to observe 35th Drivers' Day on January 14

Imphal, January 10 2024: All Manipur Road Transport Drivers and Motor Workers' Union is all set to observe the 35th Drivers' Day with offering of floral tributes to those drivers who lost their lives in serving the public, on January 14 at the Drivers, Union office, MG Avenue, here.

Talking to media persons at its MG Avenue office, here, on Wednesday, Union secretary M Anil Meitei informed that as a part of the Drivers' Day, floral tributes will be offered in respect of the 306 drivers who lost their lives while serving for the people.

While appealing to the people to take part in the tribute event, he also emphasised that drivers cease all forms of transport service on the said day.

The secretary further stated that the driver community has been shouldering huge responsibility in bringing in essential commodities into the state in addition to providing passenger services, and helping the public to meet their daily needs.

Though the Union is focused to strengthening relationship between the public and the drivers, the transport operators continue to face discrimination and acts of atrocities within and outside the state, Anil lamented.

He also recounted various unwanted incidents and atrocities committed including killing of drivers and handymen in Assam and Nagaland, thrashing by unknown miscreants for not paying 'tax' and missing of father-son duo from Yairipok till date.

While referring to killing of drivers by unknown miscreants along NH-37 at Keithelmanbi and Jiribam, abduction and killing of another from Sekmai and atrocities committed during the economic blockade called by ANSAM in 2016, among others, Anil Meitei appealed to all concerned to treat them with love and respect as they are risking their lives for the sake of the people.

He also appealed to the government to extend support and help the drivers who are helpless now due to the on going crisis in the state.
