Imphal, April 24 2024:
With an objective to improve the education system, Apunba Ireipakki Maheiroi Sinpanglup (AIMS) surveyed government schools and'found several inadequacies.
In a release, AIMS general secretary Khumujam Roshan Singh said that the survey was conducted to ensure government schools function properly and reduce additional expenses on education of children by the parents taking into account of the hardships brought by the ethnic conflict.
During the survey, AIMS came across several government schools with inadequate teachers with some having teachers in excess of the number of students enrolled while many of the schools faced serious infrastructure inadequacies, he conveyed.
At Moirangpurel High School, the AIM members found the local populace extending support considering eagerness of the students to have proper education.
However, some regular as well as contract teachers were found only drawing salary without discharging duties with reports also received about certain teachers not reporting for duty for over a year, Roshan disclosed, while informed that the school committee has been engaging 11 guest teachers to ensure uninterrupted education.
The secretary opined that the headmaster and the committee should initiate appropriate punitive measures against the negligent teachers.
Drawing the attention of Education Department on the matter and ensure that teachers do not shirk their responsibilities, Roshan suggested that teachers undermining interest and welfare of the students should be suspended.
Moreover, instead of focusing on transfer of teachers in greater Imphal area, the department should address shortage of teachers in schools in the periphery areas.
The general secretary also lauded Department of Education (S) for according importance in addressing shortcomings of schools as pointed out by AIMS subsequent to the survey and fulfilling their demands.
