CMC students' woes aired to NMC: Dr Ranjan

Imphal, November 22 2023: Expressing concern over reports of Kuki-Zo medical students barred from appearing the annual university examination, health minister Dr Sapam Ranjan Singh said that state government is communicating with National Medical Commission (NMC) for making special arrangement for students of Churachandpur Medical College (CMC) who could not appear the examination due to the conflict situation in the state.

After the unfortunate incident on May 3, state government has been making all possible efforts to ensure that violence affected students get academic knowledge and their career is not compromised, Dr Ranjan told media persons during a press conference held Wednesday evening at his Lamphel Sanakeithel residence.

While informing that the state government takes serious view of reports on social media and mainstream media about barring medical students belonging to Kuki-Zo community from appearing the annual university examination, the minister said there are four medical colleges in the state namely RIMS, JNIMS, CMC and Shija Academy of Health Sciences, all regulated by the National Medical Commission (NMC).

Churachandpur Medical College started its first session in the year 2022 but the violence erupted on May 3 affected normal classes for the college.

Nevertheless, government took approval from NMC for opening dual campus for CMC and continued classes so that careers of students of the college do not get spoiled, he said adding that documents as per guidelines of NMC are being shared between state government and the Union ministry.

In respect of CMC, second year examination is due more than one year after finishing first year examination while second year examination for the remaining three medical colleges are to be conducted in December this year.

It is not easy to conduct examination and approval from the dean of school of medical sciences of Manipur University, where all the four medical colleges are affiliated, is required, he said adding that the dean had already sought advice from NMC for special arrangement and awaiting response.

He also said that state government is in discussion to conduct even special examination for CMC students as per reply and advice from NMC and government is trying its best level to restore academic atmosphere in the interest of the medical students.
