37th convocation ceremony of IGNOU held

Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) organised its 37th convocation ceremony on Tuesday with the main event held at IGNOU, New Delhi.
Vice President of India Jagdeep Dhankar was chief guest of the convocation during which IGNOU vice chancellor Prof Nageshwar Rao handed over degree, diploma and certificates to students who have passed the December 2022 and June 2023 term end examinations.
The convocation Ceremony was also held at 39 regional centres of IGNOU after the main function with IGNOU Regional Centre Imphal conducting the ceremony at Asha Hall, North AOC, here, with Manipur University vice chancellor Prof N Lokendra Singh as guest of honour.
Speaking at the programme, Prof N Lokendra Singh congratulated the successful students and appreciated the activities of IGNOU Regional Centre, Imphal.
Stating that higher education in India has witnessed an impressive growth over the years, he noted that distance education works on a multi-dimensional premise and addresses the needs of different sections of the society.
It gives opportunity to working professionals to pursue studies while on job, enable fresher to take up work, draw regular earnings and pursue studies at the same time.
Further, aspirants who are not able to pursue higher studies or professional courses through formal education system can chase their dream at their conveniences and comfort level through distance learning mode, he explained.
Stressing that Indira Gand hi National Open University, with international recognition and presence, can go a long way in providing seamless access to sustainable and quality education by using innovative technologies and methodologies mandated in NEP 2020, he continued that IGNOU plays an important role in achieving the target of Gross Enrolment Ratio (GER) .
In his address, Imphal centre director Dr S Dilan Singh said that IGNOU has made a significant contribution in the promotion of higher education, community education, extension activities and continual professional development since it was established under an Act of Parliament in 1985.The Regional Centre, Imphal began its journey in 2000 with three Learner Support Centres which were under the administrative control of Shillong Regional Centre.
Today, IGNOU Imphal Centre has become the nucleus of the open and distance learning activities in the state.
It caters to learners from rural and tribal areas, disability groups, jails inmates and rehabilitation centres, government and non-government organisations, parents and home makers, the employed and employers.
The Imphal centre has started live class through Swayam Prabha transmission in Manipuri Language for under graduate programmes from RC Imphal Studio, he pointed out while mentioning that the inclusion of Manipuri language in the bouquet of channels opened up doors of education and educational support for educational aspirants living in far flung areas where conventional educational facilities are limited and people prefer to be taught in their own mother tongue.
At present IGNOU RC, Imphal has 15 Learner Support Centres with approximately 20,000 learners on the roll, the regional director said, adding that 751 learner centres under the Imphal centre are eligible for the 37th convocation of IGNOU which includes 552 master degrees, 160 bachelor's degrees, 29 diplomas and 10 certificates.
The degrees were distributed to the successful learners by Prof N Lokendra Singh.
