Imphal, June 30 2023:
While stating that an Indian Merchant Navy officer was among those killed in Thursday's gunfight at Senjam Chirang and adjoining villages, the Indigenous Tribal Leaders' Forum (ITLF) strongly condemned involvement of active serviceman in attacking Indian civilians.
In a statement, ITLF alleged that armed Meitei groups led by state forces continue to attack tribal settlements for almost two months since the violence broke out while womenfolk are being used to block security forces from aiding hapless villagers.
Even a public figure like Congress leader Rahul Gandhi was blocked from travelling to the tribal district of Chu-rachandpur, the ITLF pointed out while alleging that the N Biren-led government directed Bishnupur DC and SP to prevent Gandhi from reaching Churachandpur town by road under the false pretext of violence in tribal areas.
This showed that the government is fearful of letting any neutral observer from discovering what is really happening on the ground, ITLF maintained.
Even as Rahul Gandhi was visiting the state, violence continued unabated with tribal settlements being attacked in Kangpokpi district by Meitei gunmen supported by state forces, the ITLF said and reiterated its demand for imposition of President's Rule in the state and action against armed Meetei groups if the central government is sincere about stopping the violence.
