Governor meets women activists, visits relief camps

A team of 10 women leaders of Thawai Mirel called on Governor Anusuiya Ui-key at Raj Bhavan on Friday evening and requested her to take appropriate action against the security personnel allegedly involved in committing atrocities against women and students.
The team recalled brutal crackdown on the agitating students by RAF and Thursday's incident of lathi charge on women in Imphal East district by security forces.
They also demanded retrieving the mortal remains of the two missing students, whose video went viral so that their families can perform the last rites, requested the Governor to take action against the culprits and raised issue related to targeting drivers and transporters in the national highways.
In response, the Governor termed atrocities against women and students as "unfortunate" and informed that she had asked the chief minister, chief secretary and DGP to take steps on the same.
She also stated that a committee has launched enquiry and assured appropriate action in case any of the security personnel committed excesses.
The Governor also reminded that investigation by CBI into the missing students' case has so far resulted in arrest of four persons.
Regarding the issues on national highways, Anusuiya said that directive has been issued to the chief secretary to provide adequate security coverage to the vehicles to ensure free passage in the highways.
She then appealed to the team to remain calm and extend cooperation to any initiative for bringing back peace.
On the other-hand, Governor Anusuiya visited and met internally displaced people (IDP) at four relief camps in Imphal East district and distributed relief materials on Friday.
The Governor's visit covered Yambem High School relief camps set up at Yambem High School, PHC Yambem and MLA's residence, Yambem in Andro AC, After enquiring about problems and issues faced by the camp residents, she assured them all possible assistance from the administration as well as from Raj Bhavan, apart from conveying that all efforts are being made by central and state governments to restore normalcy and peace.
Referring to a Supreme Court order regarding protection of religious structures and homes of by IDPs, Governor said that strict action will be taken up against those who occupy such places or homes.
State's Home department has also issued order in this regard, she added and appealed the people to help the administration bring peace and normalcy in the state.
She also directed the district administration to initiate skill training programmes in the camp and asked the IDPs to admit their children in nearby schools.
As the president of Indian Red Cross Society (IRCS), Manipur State, the Governor distributed relief packages consisting of blanket, mosquito net, kitchen set and hygiene kit to the IDP families as well as distributed Rs 1000 each to pregnant women, lactating mother and patients with serious ailments in the camp.
She handed oVer eatables and blankets to the children from her side.
