Shija performs second deceased donor kidney transplantation

Achieving yet another significant milestone in organ transplantation, Shija Hospitals & Research Institute Pvt Ltd (SHRI) successfully conducted its second deceased kidney transplantation on October 11, 2023, bringing renewed hope to patients suffering from end-stage renal disease and their families.
The family of late K Romen Kumar Singh, a 31-year-old from Kongpal Kshetri Leikai in Imphal East, decided to donate his kidneys in a truly selfless move.
Romen died as a result of an Ischemic brain injury, and he was in the intensive care unit (ICU) at Kripadashini Advanced Hospital, Palace Compound for four days.
On October 11, the state's Brain Death Committee formally confirmed that Romen had cleared two rounds of brain stem death testing.
Following this declaration, his family was given the choice of organ donation, and they chose to donate his kidneys.
This noble deed gave two people the gift of life, said SHRI in a press release on Friday.
According to the release, the crossmatch test for transplantation was conducted at SHRI.
The transplant teams from SHRI and Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS), successfully retrieved both kidneys at JNIMS and, with the assistance of the Imphal East and Imphal West police, established a green corridor to transport the harvested kidneys in the shortest time possible from JNIMS to SHRI.
One kidney was transplanted into a patient at SHRI, while the other kidney was transplanted into a patient at JNIMS, Imphal.
"The management of Shija deeply honours the incredible courage and compassion exhibited by late Romen's family.
The successful deceased donor kidney transplantation at Shija Hospitals represents a significant milestone in the hospital's mission to provide state-of-the-art medical services and improve our community's overall health and well-being," it said.
Shija Hospitals successfully performed its first-ever deceased donor kidney transplantation in Manipur on August 2, 2023.SHRI is the first hospital in the entire northeast to nave performed a successful ABO-in-compatible kidney transplant and has successfully completed 96 kidney transplantations including 94 living donor kidney transplants.
Among these patients, two were from Myanmar, six from Nagaland and 83 from Manipur, the release added.
