Imphal, October 13 2023:
The High Court of Manipur has rejected Langthabal MLA Karam Shyam's application seeking dismissal of the election petition filed by ex-MLA Okram Joy challenging Shyam's victory in the 12th Manipur Legislative Assembly Election, 2022.One of the primary grounds of challenge was false statement in Karam Shyam's affidavit regarding his educational qualification, specifically pertaining to the field of study - Bachelor in Textile Technology versus Bachelor in Textile Engineering.
The petitioner argued that this discrepancy misled the electorates of Langthabal Assembly Constituency in the election.
The acting chief justice of the High Court, after hearing the arguments presented by the respective counsels on August 27 this year, reserved the judgment.
Subsequently, on Thursday, the Court announced its judgement, rejecting Karam Shyam's application.
The Court has ordered a trial for the election petition to ascertain the validity of Karam Shyam's election, emphasising the need for a thorough examination to determine whether the election was indeed void or not.
During the proceedings, HS Paonam represented petitioner Okram Joy Singh, while A Mohendro appeared for Karam Shyam.
