Imphal, October 13 2023:
Department of Relief and Disaster Management observed International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction at its Babupara office, here, on Friday with all officers and staffers of the department including Civil Defence personnel in attendance.
Speaking at the event, Relief and Disaster Management director KG Daigong emphasised on the importance of addressing disaster risk reduction in a comprehensive approach by pooling both traditional and scientific knowledge.
He also sounded the need for concerted efforts of all stakeholders to initiate responsible actions towards increasing disaster risk reduction.
"We need an inclusive approach to save lives and livelihoods from disasters and protect developmental gains from loss," he said.
"Adhering to building bylaws and constructing houses favourable to earthquake resistance as the state falls under seismic zone V will save lives and property.
Evacuation plans should be ready for any large gatherings including hotels, schools and libraries for earthquake emergency.
Likewise, adhering to proper terrace/slope cut in new road projects will decrease unwanted accidents and loss of lives due to landslides," he said.
Recalling the tragic Marangching landslide in June-July of 2022, the director suggested that authorities and implementing agencies consider the soil, topography and heavy monsoon vis-a-vis road projects to reduce disasters.
He also elaborated on this year's international theme "Fighting inequality for a resilient future; Let's Break the Cycle!" while urging all stakeholders to increase efforts to decrease disaster risk reduction in all sectors and levels.
