New Delhi, June 12 2010:
A peaceful march was taken out in the capital today by Gangte Welfare Association's youth wing over Manipur University's failure to award the recipient of Dr TS Gangte Memorial Gold Medal Award in MSc Social and Cultural Anthropology on the 30th foundation day cum medal presentation ceremony held on June 5 .
Stating that it was a discriminatory policy of the Manipur University, rallyist comprising mainly of Churachandpur district denizens noted that Dr TS Gangte was not only a renowned scholar but an educationist and founder of Churachandpur Government College.
It was the first among the Chin-Kuki-Zomi community to have the gold medal instituted in his honour.
The communities felt that failure to give the medal is an insult.
A memorandum was submitted to the Minister of Human Resources Development, Kapil Sibal and Manipur Governor Gurbachan Jagat through the Resident Commissioner of Manipur Bhawan.
In its memorandum the Gangte Welfare Association demanded that a special ceremony be held for presentation of Dr TS Gangte memorial gold medal award.
It also demanded to constitute a high level inquiry committee to look into the guff up.
Noting the press release of June 7 issued by the Manipur University which stated that Gangte's name was too long to be engraved in the medal, the memorandum stated that it was ridiculous and unconvincing.
The Resident Commissioner met the youth representatives and assured them for necessary action.
Condemning the discrimination and calling for justice for Dr TS Gangte, the rally was supported by various Delhi based tribal student bodies like Siamsin-pawlpi, Kuki Democratic Student Front, Hmar Student Assn, Zomi SangnaupangPawlpi, Khangthah Zuun Pawl and others.
