Imphal, July 05 2010:
The Department of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution has taken up necessary steps for requisition of trucks through Transport Department for lifting the required rice and sugar of the State along the Imphal-Jiri Road (National Highway 53) .
Talking to The Sangai Express, Minister of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution Y Erabot disclosed that a joint meeting of the FCI and officials of his Department chaired by him was held today and discussed various issues related to transportation of essential commodities.
The meeting took serious note of the difficulties being faced by the transporters in lifting essential goods from Ramnagar of Silchar to Imphal following the Supreme Court ruling that one truck should not carry more than 9 tonne inside Assam, the Minister said, adding that after the Supreme Court ruling, transporters are reluctant to take the road in consideration of the losses to be suffered.
Accordingly, it has been proposed that trucks would be requisitioned through Transport Dept for lifting essential commodities like rice and sugar along NH-53, he said.
