Imphal, July 05 2010:
The Nation-wide bandh called by BJP with the support of Left parties against price rise affected normal life in the State too to some extent.
Due to the 12 hour bandh which came into effect from 6 am today, shoppers were scarce in the main markets of Imphal like Paona Keithel, Thangal Keithel and Khwairamband Keithel, while traffic was light.
A number of shops downed shutters.
Even as the bandh had no effect on other districts, there were some changes in the normal activities due to the reduced number of inter-district passenger buses plying between district headquarters and Imphal.
There was little disturbance to movement of private vehicles as well as auto-rickshaws and other light passenger vehicles.

Flight service between Imphal and Kolkata was also suspended except Indian Airlines.
In support of the bandh, volunteers of CPI State Unit took out a rally across Imphal city.
They drove away auto-rickshaws and some other light passenger vehicles which were found parked at Wahengbam Leikai.
The CPI workers also forced shops of Masjid Road and Paona Keithel to shut down.
Earlier, police pulled up nine CPI activists including AITUC secretary Prijesh and CPI state executive member K Amuchou at around 9 am. Addressing the rally at Imphal, CPI State secretary Langol Iboyaima said that hike in prices of petroleum products has affected all sectors and subsequently prices of all essential commodities have sky-rocketed.
He demanded that full-proof security arrangement should be made along NH 39 and NH 53 and prevent all kinds of illegal tax collection along the highways.
All highways including NH 150 should be developed as standard highways, he asserted.
Langol Iboyaima further noted that hike in petroleum prices would produce serious impacts on the people of Manipur who have been under deep trouble because of the prolonged economic blockades and its after-effects.
Though BJP joined the bandh, its State unit did not took out any mass agitation barring some democratic protests.
