Biggest quake in a decade jolts NE & eastern India

Imphal, February 04, 2011:
A 6.4 magnitude quake, believed to be the biggest in a decade, shook most parts of the northeast including Manipur and West Bengal today evening.
The epicenter of the earthquake was in the Indo-Myanmar border, around 85 km east-southeast of Imphal, Manipur.
The quake took place at a depth of 88.8 km.
The exact location of the quake is 24.6 north latitude and 94.7 east longitude and it struck at 7.24 pm.
Tremors were felt across the entire eastern region of India including Manipur, Assam, Nagaland, Mizoram, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, West Bengal and Bihar.
Officials say this was the biggest quake in the past ten years after October 11, 2000, when the intensity was 6 on the Richter scale.
On September 21, 2009, an earthquake measuring 6.2 on the Richter was felt in the region.
The quake had left over half a dozen dead in neighbouring Bhutan where the epicentre was located.
The NE region a highly seismic risk zone experienced 34 quakes of light and moderate intensity in 2009. Our Moreh correspondent said residents experienced an intense shake and people ran out of their houses in fright.
