Imphal, February 04, 2011:
Non approval by the State Government for shifting of idols from a particular zone of the market place has resulted in a mild scuffle between police personnel and women vendors at Khwairamband Market today.
Ahead of the formal allocation of plots to street vendors at the Temporary Market shed, two idols each brought from the Nagamapal side and Sessions Court area were allowed to install at the temporary Market shed.
However idols worshipped by another section of women vendors who had been selling vegetables and other items, also on the Nagamapal side were barred from entering the Temporary Market shed with police personnel barricading the entry point and subsequently dispersing a group of women vendors who had accompanied the idols.
The police team cited non approval by the Government for preventing entry of the idols.
Earlier rituals were performed by priests and priestesses at the Temporary Market complex where officials of Imphal Municipal Council also verified licenses furnished by the women vendors who have been allotted plot of 3x4 feet space.
