World Cancer Day observed in state

As observed in the whole world, the World Cancer Day was observed in the state too organised by the Manipur Cancer Society at Keishampat Community Hall, Imphal.
Speaking in the occasion, RIMS Superintendent Dr Y Mohen said that Cancer and HIV/AIDS are one of the most dreaded diseases to the mankind.
The government is spending lots of amount in fighting AIDS even by forming legislatures' forum.
Unfortunately, the government is looking a blind eye to the matter of Cancer when numbers of cancer patients are increasing every year.
According to a survey report of the Population Based Cancer Registry, Imphal, there were 1124 cancer patients in 2006, 1234 in 2007 and 1379 in 2009.The highest record of cancer type in the state is lung cancer.
This is due to the age old tradition of smoking in various public and religious occasions and ceremonies.
Tobacco constitutes around 75 percent of the causes of cancer.
The only way to save from the dreaded disease is to give awareness to the public.
Eating of smoke dried fishes is also one of the common causes of stomach cancer.
The most common types of cancer in female are Breast and Cervix cancers.
People of the state used to visit Tata Hospital of Mumbai for treatment of Cancer.
But the trend will be changed now since state has many well wualified doctors trained in the Tata Hospital, Dr Mohen said.
Speaking as chief guest of the function, social worker Joykishan said that the world began to observe February 4 as World Cancer Day from 2006 onwards.
Changing one's eating habit and protecting one's body against the harmful UV rays of the sunlight will reduce the chance of getting Cancer by 40 percent.
In his presidential speech, Pediatric Oncologist Dr L Kameshwar stressed the need of political commitment in controlling cancer.
The government should take up initiatives to treat cancer patients free of cost.
Chief guest, social worker Joykishan released a souvenir as part of the workshop.
Cancer patients and selected donors of cancer patients were also honoured with simple gifts.
