Imphal, November 28 2010:
A heavy blow has been given to the local poultry farmers in the state when chicken imported from outside the state with low price invented the local markets.
Reports said that since the last around two months, chicken (boilers) which can be readily sell imported from outside the state have flooded the Imphal market.
Prices of this imported chicken are also low compared to the same produced by the local farms.
As the same time, local poultry farmers could not compete with the price of the imported chicken as prices of chicken feed is high.
Regarding the matter, Ch Durba, a member of the All Manipur Farmers' and Traders' Association said that they could not release chicken from their farms as there is a gulf of difference between the expenditure incurred by them in rearing the chicken as well the time consumed in rearing.
If they sale out their produces to the rate as low as that imported from outside, they would faced a heavy loss, he observed saying that the price of chicken just hatch which was earlier cost Rs 30 each has now been increased to Rs 40 .
Likewise, the feed per 100 kg bag which earlier cost Rs 1500 has also been hiked at Rs 1800.Not only this, other materials required in the rearing of chickens have also been increased many folds in the last around three months.
Even though prices these materials and items are hiked up, they could managed their business by slight increased in the price of their products before imported chicken invented the market.
But with the increasing domination of the market by the imported chicken, a heavy blow is given to the poultry farmers, he said.
