Police commandos have apprehended two activists of the armed outfit KCP Tabungba group, who were involved in the hand grenade attack at the counter of Misao Gas at Chingmeirong, and recovered arms, ammunition and other incriminating documents from Tangjeng area today.
Parading the arrested persons identified as Thounaojam Jineshwor Singh alias Bomcha (35) s/o T Ngouba of Langmeidong Makha Leikai but residing at Khabam Makha Leikai and Thingojam Somir alias Action alias Leiching (19) s/o T Subhas of Heirangoithong Maibam Leikai at Thoubal district police headquarters this afternoon, Additional SP (Ops) of Thoubal Jogeshchandra Haobijam said that based on specific information that KCP Tabungba group is planning to carry out a series of extortion drive and abduction in Imphal East and Thoubal, a joint operation was launched by the Commandos of Thoubal and Imphal East district at Tangjeng area today.
After a massive manhunt, the combined team arrested the two UGs and recovered one 9 mm pistol, one magazine with 8 live rounds, two Chinese made hand grenades, 21 demand letters of the outfit, one Kinetic Honda Activa, two mobile phones and five SIM cards from their possession, the police officer disclosed.
He further informed that the arrested duo worked under the command of one S/S commander of Imphal East Malemnganba of KCP Tabungba group.
Malemnganba had instructed the two to throw grenade at the house of a Chief Engineer of Electricity Department and abduct one person whose details were made known to them by Malemnganba through phone.
During interrogation, Jineshwor has confessed to have lobbed the grenade at Misao Gas agency counter on October 7 last.
He was introduced to KCP Tabungba group by one Koirou of Langmeidong, a bail-out UNLF cadre who after his release on bail joined KCP Tabungba group, the police officer said, adding that Jineshwor was paid Rs 10,000 for the act.
On the other hand, Somir confessed that he was the one who placed a grenade at the house of Salam Biren (retired engineer) at Keishampat Thiyam Leikai on October 25 and he is the second in command of Imphal East district.
Furthermore, he served extortion notice to many Engineers and brick-fields in Imphal, the Additional SP informed.
The police officer said Somir was earlier arrested in connection with theft of mobile phones at Singjamei Supermarket.
During his brief stay in the jail, Somir came into contact with cadres of KCP group and through them he joined the outfit after release.
He was given the charge of second in command over a short period after successful completion of extortions mission, the police officer added.
