Imphal, August 04 2023: Former Chairperson of the Manipur Human Rights Commission Justice WA Shishak passed away yesterday at RIMS Hospital.

He was 82 .

Justice Shishak also served as the Chief Justice of Chhatisgarh High Court and Himachal Pradesh High Court till his retirement on January 24, 2002 .

The Manipur Human Rights Commission has extended heartfelt condolences over the demise of its former Chairperson.

Following the passing away of the former Chairperson of MHRC, Justice UB Saha, MHRC Chairperson and officials and staff of MHRC extended sincere condolences to the bereaved family with prayers for eternal peace for the departed soul, said a statement issued by E Anand Singh, Deputy Secretary, MHRC.

The statement went on to share that Justice WA Shishak who was born in 1941 at Shangshak in Ukhrul district, served as Chairperson of MHRC from September 23, 2003 till May 9, 2010 .

He became Judge of the Gauhati High Court in 1989 and on December 4, 2000, he was elevated to the post of Chief Justice in Chhattisgarh High Court and then the Chief Justice of Himachal Pradesh High Court on January 24, 2002 till his retirement.

According to the statement, MHRC Chairperson Justice UB Saha, member KK Singh along with MHRC secretary Rosita Haobam and Law Officer W Basantakumar visited Justice WA Shishak at the guest house of the High Court of Manipur recently.

Therein, suggesting a means to overcome the ongoing conflict, the former Chief Justice stressed on the need for all political and community leaders of all groups including the Kukis and Meiteis staying in and outside the State, irrespective of religion and political ideology to work together in order to maintain peace and tranquility and keep all communities of Manipur united.

In response, Justice Saha assured the former MHRC Chairperson that the Commission will do justice to all communities as advised.

The United Naga Council has also expressed grief at the passing away of visionary leader Justice Wungazan A Shishak.

In a condolence message, Ng Lorho, president, UNC expressed profound grief and extended condolences to the bereaved family members while adding that it is not just his family and dear ones who will be deprived of a tall fatherly figure like him but that his demise will be a great loss to the Tangkhul community in particular and Nagas in general.

Stating that he was the first High Court Chief Justice from amongst the Nagas, the release maintained that his abstract quality of justice, righteousness and integrity will remain a shining example in the history of Naga society.

"We will dearly miss him! Oh great soul! You're gone to be with the Lord Jesus but your services, sacrifices and stewardship will always remain as an inspiration for the younger generation.

May your gentle soul rest in peace!" UNC said.
