113 dengue cases recorded, highest in Imphal West

Amid reports of poor sanitation and shortage of basic materials, including mosquito nets and repellents in the relief camps where thousands of people affected by the ethnic violence are taking shelter for over three months, at least 113 cases of Dengue have been detected in the state with Imphal West district recording the highest number of the vector borne disease.
According to State Malaria Officer Dr Sanasam Gopal, mosquito responsible for Dengue disease are mostly active during daytime and they lay eggs in clean water.
As a result, maximum of Dengue cases are recorded in urban areas.
The peak season for the vector borne disease is from July till November in the state.
As on Friday, the state has recorded 113 positive cases of Dengue for the current season.
Number of cases reported in different districts is 61 in Imphal West, 16 in Imphal-East, 12 in Thoubal, 11 in Bishnupur, four in Churachandpur and one or two each in Kakching, Tengnoupal, Chandel, Senapati and Kangpokpi district while there is no report of Dengue in Pherzawl, Jiribam, Tamenglong, Noney, Ukhrul and Kamjong districts.
The government has already taken up preventive measures like fogging, chemical treatment/soaking of mosquito nets and others to prevent further outbreak of the disease, the officer said and appealed to the public to look out for waterlogging in their areas and not to let broken pots or anything to hold water in the open.
One should also regularly clean/ change the water outlet of refrigerator and practice dry day (in the sense of addressing open waterlogging issue) once a week.
One can also get Gambusia fingerlings from the state health department and put them in big pots holding water plants as they are the most effective consumer of mosquito larvae, he said while encouraging the use of mosquito repellents and full body covering clothes.
Dr Gopal further said that there is strong possibility of recording more such cases while informing that the state recorded 503 cases last year.
