Imphal, September 23 2010:
With the doctor offering apology to the family, the row that erupted at the Gynae ward of the RIMS Hospital over the assault on a woman in delivery room has ended today.
Dr Paradutt Dev Burman, undergoing third year PG course in RIMS, had on September 20 assaulted a woman in the labour room of the ward.
The woman was identified as Khaikhom Thaba (26), wife of Kh Hemanta of Khangabok part-III Makha Leikai.
The doctor slapped her face repeatedly allegedly for her loud crying at the time of delivery.
Tension was built up between the RIMS doctor and the family of the woman over the incident.
However, the matter was settled with the intervention of the higher authority of the RIMS Hospital today.
In the office of the Medical Superintendent, Dr Y Mohen today, Khundrakpam Sunil representing the family of the woman said that Dr Paradut slapped the woman in the delivery room repeatedly.
The doctor's act has made the patients to feel all the more distressed, whereas they should feel relaxed and free of fear on reaching the hospital thinking that doctors will save them and relieve them of all pains.
The family earlier decided to seek help from the law court.
But the family reviewed the decision as the concerned doctor has offered apology, and the RIMS authority has assured of taking up appropriate action against the doctor involved in the assault.
Dr Paradutt expressed his regrets over the incident saying that it had hurt the sentiments of all sections of the society in Manipur.
While explaining that he had not done it intentionally but in order to control her wailings while struggling to deliver the child.
RIMS Medical Superintendent, Dr Y Mohen observed that such an incident in which a doctor beating his patient never occurred in the past.
But the doctor had done it to control the woman when her hue and cry disturbed the process of delivery of the baby.
Even though such cases are rare, it happens sometimes, he further observed.
