Imphal, January 05 2024:
Poirei Leimarol Meira Paibi Apunba Manipur (PLMPAM) and All Manipur Women's Voluntary Association (AMAWOVA) have threatened to launch an intense agitation if the FIR lodged against 12 meira paibis is not cancelled at the earliest.
PLMPAM and AMAWOVA put their demand forward during a press conference held at All Manipur United Clubs' Organisation's (AMUCO) office at Kwakeithel today.
Speaking to the media, Y Kunjarani Chanu, president, AMAWOVA strongly decried the FIR filed by the police against 12 meira paibis for allegedly objecting to deployment/presence of Central forces at Sagang village on January 2 .
Maintaining that the FIR should be cancelled, she asserted that efforts to arrest meira paibis are uncalled for.
She pointed out that both the State Government and the Central forces should understand why the public do not want their presence in their villages.
At this juncture, the AMAWOVA president highlighted the numerous accusations of biased behaviour levelled against Central forces since May 3 and the multitude of calls for their withdrawal from the State made by many sections of society including meira paibis.
Instead of engaging the Central forces in unbiased efforts to control the conflict, they are deployed in peaceful regions thus inviting the ire of the villagers and the meira paibis.
Both PLMPAM and AMAWOVA strongly condemn such moves, Y Kunjarani Chanu said.
"We view the FIR filed against the 12 meira paibis as an FIR against all meira paibis.
If they are to be arrested then all meira paibis should be arrested", she emphasized.
The State Government's move to suppress meira paibis should be countered accordingly, otherwise Manipur will be reduced to a society with no guardians, she asserted.
Thus, she appealed to the public and all meira paibis to stand firm in their resolve to oppose this act of suppression by the State Government.
The press conference was also attended by T Keisham Kumudini, vice-president PLMPAM; Th Apabi, general secretary, PLMPAM and Ksh Sujata, general secretary, AMAWOVA among others.
