MHHDCL assures purchase of quality handloom products

Manipur Handloom and Handicrafts Development Corporation Limited (MHHDCL) general manager (administration) Th Basanta has assured weavers of the state that the corporation will buy their products if they maintain standard quality and the price is reasonable.
He gave the assurance while speaking during the closing ceremony of the State Handloom Expo (Haathkargh Mela) organised by the corporation at GM Hall, here, on Friday.
The expo was organised under the sponsorship of Office of the Development Commissioner for Handloom and Handicrafts (DCHH), ministry of textiles.
DCHH deputy director Priyadarshini Dripa, MHHDCL general manager Th Basanta and national award winning artisan Maisnam Lalini attended the closing ceremony as chief guest, president and guest of honour respectively.
Speaking on the occasion, Basanta informed the gathering that there is no market shortage for quality products with reasonable price while assuring that the corporation is ready to procure such products if they meet standard criteria of quality and price of the corporation.
Following an instruction from the state government, the corporation is in the process of making available school uniforms, curtains, table cloths, sofa cushions and covers as well as interior decoration items made from local handloom and handicraft products to government institutions and offices.
The corporation is wondering if it will be able to meet the demand, he said, while urging weavers and artisans to diversify their products while conforming to the quality standard of the corporation.
In her address, Priya-darshini Daripa urged the weavers to include handloom marks in their products as it will help in easy identification of authentic handloom products.
Weavers can consult Weavers' Service Centres for getting approval of such marks, she added.
Maisnam Lalini shared her experience in weaving 'Saphi Lanphi' and how she was conferred national award for her work.
She also deliberated on the importance of according GI tag to a particular product, and how the patterns and motifs on the cloth are associated with the history of Manipur.
