Ukhrul, January 05 2024:
'Intensive Coaching for Exam Excellence to HSLC Candidates, 2024', an initiative of Tangkhul Katamnao Saklong (TKS) being taken up in collaboration with URA Trust, commenced at Ukhrul Central School (UCS), Phungreitang in Ukhrul town, here, on Thursday.
Talking to The People's Chronicle, TKS vice president Omry Ningshen informed that the free coaching shall be open to all interested HSLC candidates from all schools in Ukhrul town and villages.
He said that on the first day of the coaching class, more than 50 students, who came from different parts of the district, have enrolled.
According to the TKS Education Team, the intensive coaching programme was initiated as part of the TKS' Educational Breakthrough programme.
"Led by experienced teachers, we aim to shape their paths for higher education during this foundational milestone.
The initiative is designed to instil confidence among HSLC candidates, preparing them to navigate the challenges of higher education and the professional world".
The coaching programme will focus on interactive sessions, monitoring and evaluation and regular progress checks with a feedback mechanism.
Experienced teachers will lead the programme, focusing not only on academic success but also on overall personal growth, it said.
The Team continued that while recognising the significance of all competitions, our exclusive emphasis is on HSLC candidates.
"This exam plays a pivotal role in a student's academic journey, serving as a foundational stepping stone for future educational pursuits.
It is at this juncture, students begin shaping both their academic and professional paths, making the HSLC exam a uniquely significant and influential milestone," it added.
Crediting American Baptist missionary Rev William Pettigrew for bringing modern education among the Tangkhul Na-gas over a century ago in 1896, the Team asked; "While Pettigrew' initiative has contributed to high literacy rate and success within the Tangkhul community, a lingering question persists: Have we fully realised the potential of Pettigrew's efforts, and can we invest more in improving education quality?" Adapting to the changing times, numerous schools have been established to meet evolving needs.
Despite a significant student population, a limited number can effectively adapt and compete with students from other communities or states at higher levels.
This is not an indication of the intelligence of Tangkhul students but rather reflects the absence of adequate guidance and mentors to shape their educational journey.
The community's commitment to education is evident, with over 1500-plus students appearing in the HSLC exam in recent years.
Despite facing various challenges and limitations in the education institutions, these students have consistently achieved a pass rate exceeding 70 per cent over the past five years, indicating their competence and resilience in learning amid challenges, it added.
