Bird traps seized

A number of bird traps and nets have been seized during a drive conducted today in the early morning at Bengoon Khulakpat Leikai and Uchiwa.
The drive was conducted by a team of Joint Co-ordination Committee on Wildlife & Biodiversity (JCCWB), Mayang Imphal Police led by ASI H Ibomcha and staff of Mayang Imphal Beat Office.
The team the found bird traps and nets used for trapping birds however the persons who were setting up the traps fled the area taking advantage of the surrounding water bodies.
The team further informed that strict measures will be taken up to trace the individuals who were setting up the bird-traps.
Speaking in connection with the drive, JCCWB convenor Romesh Ningthoujam said that killing and trapping of birds especially during the arrival season of migratory birds will lead to ecological imbalances.
In view of the above, he sought support from the local clubs and organisations to safeguard these birds.
Talking about the reports of excavating hills in various places of the State, he urged the Government to look into this serious matter to maintain the ecological balance.
The drive against bird traps has been conducted with the primary objective of safeguarding the various species of the birds.
