Imphal, October 29 2023:
An NGO named Environment and Economic Management Association (EEMA) which runs a shelter home at Haobam Marak Irom Leikai has clarified that it has nothing to do with the activities of Mya Kyay Mon who was arrested by Imphal West police on October 23 .
The woman of Burmese origin was arrested by police for not possessing proper documents.
Speaking to media persons today, EEMA secretary S Radhapiyari said that Mya Kyay Mon was brought to their shelter home in February this year by one Tuiui from Myanmar (Burma) who teaches Burmese language at Manipur University at the suggestion of a human right activist.
Although Mya Kyay Mon hails from Burma, she later claimed that she had received Norwegian citizenship.
But she understood very little English, Hindi or Meiteilon.
As such, communication with the woman of Burmese origin was very difficult, Radhapiyari said.
During her stay at the shelter home, she often defied the rules of the home and went out quite often with different people.
Some Kuki people too came from Churachandpur and Mya Kyay Mon went out with them saying that they were visiting prisoners in jail.
"Subsequently we asked the particular human right activist to take away Mya Kyay Mon but the human right activist requested us to keep the woman at the home for some more time as some of her documents were still incomplete", Radhapiyari said.
Following strong pressure from the local people after the violent conflict erupted on May 3, the human right activist was asked again to take away the Burmese woman.
Subsequently, the human right activist took Mya Kyay Mon to the airport on May 6 so that she could go home, Radhapiyari said.
"After that we did not hear anything about Mya Kyay Mon", she said.
"But some volunteers of Meitei Leepun came yesterday and said that Mya Kyay Mon was arrested by police from Imphal Bazar area.
They also told us that the woman was deeply involved in planning the recent violence", Radhapiyari conveyed.
Saying that they were taken by surprise on hearing the revelation, the EEMA secretary said that the shelter home was not related at all even if the woman of Burmese origin was involved in planning the widespread violence.
She then appealed to all the people not to see the shelter home in the wrong light even if the woman was involved in the violence.
