37th National Games, Goa 2023 : Sophia Chanu wins third gold in newly introduced Pencak Silat, fencers add two medals

Manipur registered yet another gold medal in the newly introduced Pencak Silat at the 37th National Games as Sanasam Sophia Chanu finished on top in the women's 65-70 kg category tanding competition today.
With Yaikhom Anjali having won a gold medal yesterday and Sinam Chingkhei and Sinam Jivan on October 27, it was third gold medal and 8th overall medal in the discipline which is underway at the Campal Sports Complex, Panaji.
It was also Manipur's 7th gold medal in the Games.
Naorem Boynao, Huidrom Bishan, Yaikhom Kiran, Shamjetsabam Bidyaluxmi, and the pair of Thingbaijam Dayalaxmi and Thokchom Benao have won bronze medals in different events of the same discipline.

Over the impressive medal haul in the discipline, the team coach L Ranjit said that they are happy with the performance of the young players.
He also maintained that the team could have won more medals.
Sadly, injuries among athletes during the bouts forced them to settle with bronze medals this time, he added.
The day also saw Manipuri fencers secure a silver and a bronze medal apiece at SPM Stadium, Goa University in Panjim.
Men's foil team comprising H Rabikumar, S Hemash, L Tomba, K Abhinash earned the silver going down 35-45 to Services in the final today.
Women's Epee team of Laiphrakpam Chinglembi, Maharabam Stella, Saikhom Nelcyrose and Laiphrakpam Bidyabati had settled for the bronze medal earlier in the day having gone down to Haryana in the semis.
On October 27, Nelcyrose Saikhom had won a bronze medal in the women's individual epee event.
Fencers Konsam Denny (men's individual foil) and W Sonia (women's individual foil) had also won a bronze medal apiece.
With three medals added today, Manipur now has amassed 21 medals - 7 gold, 3 silver and 11 bronze.
It may be noted that lifters Ph Ranibala (55 kg gold), S Nirupama (64 kg silver), S Chaoba (76 kg bronze) and P Umeshwori (71 kg bronze) had added four medals in the discipline before Ariha Pangambam (aerobic gold), Ariha, Anjori, Leishilembi Chabungbam (aerobic trio), S Ruban (vaulting horse gold, floor exercise silver) four medals in gymnastics.
