Imphal, October 29 2023:
Locals of Lamlai Mayai Leikai have condemned the allegations levelled against Achoibam Deben, who was the Indian National Congress (INC) candidate in Lamlai A/C in the last assembly election and further appealed for withdrawing the charges levelled against him.
A meeting attended by people from Ayung Khong, Chalou and Napet was organised against the frequent visits of police to the residence of Achoibam Deben, intimidating his family members and making false charge against him at the locality on Sunday.
Speaking to media persons after the meeting, one Chakpram Babita Leima recounted that ten political parties took out a rally to submit a memorandum to the Governor regarding the present conflict on October 13 and there were some confrontations with the police on duty.
Police have been not only trying to arrest Deben in connection with the incident, but they also frequently visit his house and intimidate family members.
A relief camp is still running at the residence of Deben, she pointed out while condemning the frequent visits of the police at the residence of Deben and intimidating his family members.
It is natural to have some confrontations between the protestors and police during protest.
Meira Paibis were even lathi charged by security forces during protests.
While brushing aside all those incidents, it is unfortunate to level charges against Deben for the confrontation during the protest, she contended.
Urging the police to stop harassing Deben, she stated that the locals are now guarding Deben's wife and children as they are scared.
Stressing the need to jointly work for resolving the current conflict in the state, she said that it is not the time to fight amongst the people, and appealed to the government for an understanding so that the charges levelled against Deben could be withdrawn.
