Imphal, October 31 2023:
Chief Minister has called upon the people of the state for extending cooperation in resolving the current crisis and restoring peace.
He assured that strict measures would be taken up to combat anti-social or illegal activities.
The CM made this appeal while attending as chief guest of the National Unity Day observance held at the 1st Battalion Manipur Rifles Parade Ground, here, on Tuesday.
Upon his arrival at the venue, Biren took the general salute and inspected the march past parade featuring nine contingents.
The contingents, led by special assistant inspector general (Legal), police HQ Nepram Netrajit, included troops from Border Security Force, Central Reserve Police Force, Combined Manipur Rifles (Male), Combined India Reserve Battalion (Male), Civil Police Imphal West (Male), Civil Police Imphal East (Male), 9th India Reserve (Mahila), NCC Boys and Girls, and 65 NCC Girls.
Extending his best wishes to the people of the state on this occasion, Biren highlighted that National Unity Day is observed across the country on October 31 every year since 2014 to commemorate the birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, who played a pivotal role in the political integration of India and in strengthening the nation.
As the first home minister of Independent India, Sardar Patel played a crucial role in the relief and rehabilitation of refugees coming Pakistan following the partition.
The freedom fighter is also recognised as the Patron Saint of India's Civil Servants for introducing Modern All India Services.
One of his significant contributions to the country was the integration of British provinces and more than 500 independent princely states were brought under the Union of India, the CM recalled.
Biren emphasised that the state government, following the footsteps of the freedom fighter, has been diligently working to safeguard unity and integrity of the state and to promote its development.
He stressed the importance of unity and cooperation during this time, encouraging everyone to work together positively and constructively.
By doing so, he believed that peace and unity could be maintained in the state.
The CM also expressed concern over the deteriorating state of the environment and climate change.
He urged all concerned to help in maintaining ecological balance with nature and emphasised that human activities, such as large-scale deforestation, have caused changes in rainfall and weather patterns.
He called for collaborative efforts to preserve nature and the environment.
While highlighting the various initiatives like provision of soft loans and other assistance provided by the state government for the welfare of its citizens, Biren appealed to the public to let go of past grievances and join hands in restoring peace in the state.
He also emphasised that political differences, if any, could be resolved through dialogue.
The CM further appealed to the media community not to publish press releases from unauthorised or unrecognised organisations with strong words that could hurt the sentiments of certain communities or create tensions among them.
He urged the public to shoulder their responsibility in maintaining peace and harmony and avoid inciting enmity among people by posting inflammatory remarks or comments on social media platforms.
During the observance, the CM led those present in taking the National Unity Day Pledge.
The event was also attended by the speaker of Manipur Legislative Assembly, ministers, MLAs, chief secretary, DGP, senior civil and police officials, and senior officers of paramilitary forces, among others.
