Bishnupur, July 02 2023: Kuki militants launched a brutal attack killing three Meitei village volunteers and injuring three others including a woman at Khoijumantabi provoking a retaliation that burnt several houses today.

The Kuki militants, armed with sophisticated weapons, carried out the attack on a post, set up by Meitei villagers to keep vigil in the area, from close range at midnight (12.10 am) .

Heavy exchange of fire ensued afterwards.

The Kuki militants might also have suffered some casualties, said sources.

Khoijumantabi falls under Borayangbi GP, Kumbi police station in Bishnupur district.

The three killed in the attack have been identified as Ningombam Ibomcha Meitei (32), son of N Iboton, Haobam Ipocha Meitei (40), son of Late H Kesho and Naorem Rajkumar (25), son of N Sanjoy.

All of them hailed from Khoijumantabi.

Ningombam Ibomcha is survived by his wife and two children (minor girls) .

Haobam Ipocha is survived by his wife and three children, all girls.

Soon after the news of the attack spread, angry mobs from different sides converged at Khoijumantabi and later burnt several houses belonging to Hmar at Langya village in the nearby area.

Langya village is inhabited by the Hmar and Kom community.

The infuriated mob did not burn houses belonging to people of Kom community.

During the incident, the people rescued two people from the Kom community.

Later, a large number of people including the surviving family members of the three slain persons marched towards the house of Kumbi AC MLA Sanasam Premchandra.

After confronting the security forces for sometime on their way, the people brought the remains of the three village volunteers and kept them on the front porch of the MLA's house.

As the MLA was not home at the time, the people waited for him.

Later, Chief Minister N Biren Singh, Works Minister Govindas Konthoujam, Moirang AC MLA Thongam Shanti and Kumbi AC MLA S Premchandra Meitei arrived and paid their respect and floral tributes to the remains of the three village volunteers.

The Chief Minister pacified the families of the deceased persons and heard their grievances.

From the residence of MLA S Premchandra, Chief Minister N Biren Singh then headed to Khoijumantabi and took stock of the situation.

The CM, however, couldn't reach the post where the killing took place for security reasons due to "intensified firing" .

Speaking to reporters, Apunba Nupi Lup Bishnupur president L Pramo said the incident that happened at midnight at Khoijumantabi is not a sign of the State returning to normalcy.

All bunkers installed by the Kuki militants in the area should be demolished and destroyed to deter future attacks on civilians, she said, appealing to the Chief Minister to award Rs 10 lakh each to the families of the slain volunteers and provide Rs 5 lakh each to those injured.

The Government must scrap the Suspension of Operation (SoO) and take appropriate actions against the Kuki militants, she added.

Accusing the Chief Minister of playing politics, she said the people do not agree with the CM's visit today.

Now is not the time to play politics.

While the Chief Minister has promised to destroy Kuki militants' bunkers, more are being installed every day, she said.

L Pramo also denounced the Prime Minister's silence on the Manipur crisis and said both Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Chief Minister N Biren Singh should act sincerely to restore peace.
