Senapati, September 11 2022:
Senapati district has multiple sports talent (inborn talent) and with adequate infrastructure and training facilities athletes can compete with the best and become the best.
This was stated by president Senapati district Olympic Association Manipur (SDOAM) Joram Koveo Woba while speaking to Hills Hornbill express.
Taking note of the Senapati district's noteworthy performance in the recently concluded 2nd edition of Manipur Olympic Games, where they bagged 20 medals including 6-gold, 4- silver and 10- bronze, to emerge as one of the best among the hill districts of the State, Woba lamented that Senapati district is very much deprived of sports infrastructure.
Despite lacking standard football ground, basketball court, contact sports arena, track and field ground, the athletes from the district excel at the State, National and international level, he said while expressing unhappiness over the disparity in sports infrastructural development in the State by the authority concerned.
If proper sports infrastructure development is provided, Senapati district could become a powerhouse of sports talents, he said.
He also took pride in the district girls who clinched gold in both volleyball and basketball events despite having no standard volleyball court nor basketball court available in the district.
Above these, the district women's volleyball team have won the State championship for two consecutive years but, it is a matter of shame that the champions are yet to get proper training facilities and infrastructure.
SDOAM president also took note of the district boxers and MMA athletes who have shone in both national and international arenas and assured that if the district is provided adequate sports facilities, district athletes can take Manipur to greater heights.
He also went on to regret the non fulfillment of assurances the association had got from the present Chief Minister on a number of occasions for the development of district sports facilities and infrastructure.
SDOAM also has not received much co-operation from district authority of Youth Affairs and Sports Department and district administration as expected, he said while urging authority concerned and the State Government to provide the district with basic sports infrastructure to uplift the spirit of sports in the district in particular and State as a whole.
