8th Red Shield Division Polo Tourney begins

The prestigious Eighth Red Shield Division Polo Tournament was inaugurated with an impressive opening ceremony yesterday at Mapal Kangjeibung (Imphal Polo Ground).
Thirteen polo teams will be contesting for top honours in the event.
The opening ceremony was keenly witnessed by large number of Army Personnels, civil population and students of various schools including Sainik School Imphal, highlighting their interest in a heritage sport which originated in Manipur.
Maj Gen Virendra Singh, VSM, Inspector General Assam Rifles (South), and H Deleep Singh, IAS, Commissioner, Higher Education & Social Welfare and president, Manipur Horse Riding and Polo Association graced the occasion as the chief guest and the functional president respectively.
Speaking on the occasion, president of Manipur Horse Riding & Polo Association complimented the Army and Red Shield Division for supporting and promoting the traditional sporting culture of Manipur.
He also thanked the Army for its endeavours in bringing peace and prosperity to the state.
He further complimented the organising committee of the Army for their effort in conducting this tournament.
Major General Virendra Singh, VSM, IGAR (South) wished all the participating teams the very best for the exhilarating matches and mentioned that competition of this nature inculcates all the spirit to win and perform to the best level.
He also highlighted that encouraging young people to broaden the horizons of their ambition is vital and polo which is a competitive sport should play a major role in inculcating spirit of sportsmanship in the young and budding riders of Manipur.
Assuring people of the State, of the continued support from the army for promotion of traditional sports, he declared The Eighth Red Shield Division Polo Tournament 2018 open.
The ceremony also witnessed an impressive band display by Indian Army and tent pegging exhibition by junior riders of Manipur.
