Imphal, February 13 2018:
Pointing out that the water of Thoubal River has been muddied severely due to washing of gravels quarried from the hill slopes of Louphong village, Congress MLA Surjakumar Okram today sought attention of the Manipur Legislative Assembly into the matter and demanded probe by a House committee to check whether the water is still fit for human consumption or harmful to health.
During zero hour today, Surjakumar said that people settled along the course of Thoubal River and 35 local clubs have already lodged a complaint to the authority concerned informing that the river water is no longer fit for human consumption.
They have also warned that intense modes of agitation would be launched from February 16 if the authorities concerned fail to look into the matter.
The Congress MLA then appealed to the Government to take up necessary action so as to ward off the proposed agitation.
He asserted that the muddied water has been posing serious health challenges to the people of Wangkhem, Lilong, Wabagai, Thoubal and Andro Assembly segments.
K Meghachandra asserted that the pollution of Thoubal River is an indication of the abject failure of Water Resources Department, Manipur Pollution Control Board and the Forest Department.
Washing of gravels in Thoubal River causes massive siltation and it would lead to floods during rainy season, Meghachandra warned.
He also expressed keen desire for the Government to take up some concrete actions so as to address the issue effectively.
