Deputy Chief Minister Gaikhangam has stated that it is women who have been subjugating and violating rights entitled to women in Manipur.
He was speaking at a convention held today at Cong- ress Bhavan on the topic 'Women Empowerment in Manipur' .
The convention was organised by the Manipur Pra- desh Mahila Congress Committee in commemoration of the 125th birth anniversary of the first Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru.
Gaikhangam claimed that women have been given powers since a long time back but majority of the women do not realize it which only facilitates men to take undue advantages.
At the time of election, it is women who often ask themselves how could they vote in favour of women candidates.
Nonetheless, the Government has been studying enaction of Acts or insertion of rules which can enable womenfolk exercise powers given to them.
No one can forfeit the rights and powers given to women but it has turned that it is women who have been subjugating members of their own sex, Gaikhangam asserted.
He also questioned why most parents do not feel very happy when a girl child is born.
The Deputy Chief Minister who is also the president of Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) appealed to all the womenfolk to use their talents and resources for meaningful pur- poses and also to shoulder due responsibilities.
It would be worthwhile to recall Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru vision to empower weaker sections particularly women and alleviate their socio-economic conditions, Gaikhangam said.
Women have tremendous roles to play in mankind's efforts to bring peace on the planet.
As such, women should understand their responsibilities and act accordingly.
MLA DK Korungthang who is also in-charge of Mahila Congress underscored the need to empower women particularly in the field of electoral politics.
He then cautioned that any action when tend to project womenfolk as advocates of mob justice would only lead to destruction of facts and perhaps injustice.
Korungthang appealed to all the womenfolk to take pro-active roles in all constructive activities.
PDA Chairman T Mangibabu highlighted the need on the part of women to understand the country's law and join electoral politics.
Empowerment of women who do not understand law may also prove harmful to the State as a whole, Mangibabu said.
Social Welfare Minister AK Mirabai, MLA S Bira and many other party leaders were also present at the convention.
