Imphal, August 10, 2013:
Deputy Chief Minister Gaikhangam who is also in charge of Horticulture Department has stated that efforts are on to rescue the two Horticulture officers abducted by suspected militants on their way from Senapati to Imphal yesterday afternoon in connection with a monetary demand of Rs 50 lakh.
"We have some information regarding the abduction and we are working to secure their release through dialogue", said Gaikhangam.
He, however, did not name the particular UG group.
He also appealed to all concerned to release the two officers in view of the anxiety suffered by their families.
Talking about the particular UG group which recently abducted seven people including two engineers coming from outside the State and two IFCD engineers, the Deputy Chief Minister stated that some UG groups under SoO or ceasefire pact have been indulging in abduction of people and ransom as a strategy.
It seems that groups under SoO pact sponsor another group and indulge in extortion in the name of the second group and the booties thus collected are shared between them.
The Joint Monitoring Group and the relevant authorities have been asked to look into it.
He further appealed to all groups under SoO not to indulge in unlawful activities like abduction and extortion.
On being enquired about UNC's bandh, Gaikhangam remarked that it is not advisable to impose one's writ after misinterpreting democracy.
Informing that the State Government is keeping in touch with the Government about the next round of tripartite talk, Gaikhangam appealed to call off the bandh in the larger interest of public.
