VDF men arrested for trying to sneak in items to jail inmates

Two VDF personnel who attempted to sneak tobacco packs and cigarettes into Sajiwa Jail were apprehended by the jail authority today.
The two VDF personnel were later handed over to Heingang police.
Meanwhile, the Sajiwa Jail authority has established the identity of two persons including a VDF man who were said to provide mobile phones to a convicted KCP leader, Nando.
The VDF personnel who tried to sneak tobacco and cigarettes into the jail have been identified as No 832 Oinam Surchandra (27) of Oinam Maning Leikai and No 800 Elangbam Chitaranjan (27) of Tronglaobi.
They were apprehended this morning around 5.50 .
Producing the VDF duo before the media at the office of Jail SP today, Jail SP IK Muivah said that in the absence of Jail Warden since 20 years back, the jail has been guarded by personnel of 4th IRB, VDF and Jail staff.
Commandos have also been pressed into the service in case of emergency.
The SP said five packs of tobacco (khaini) and two packs of cigarettes were found from the possession of the two VDF personnel while the jail authority checked them this morning.
Further, the SP said two persons said to be involved in providing mobile handsets to KCP leader Nando were identified.
A VDF man said to be involved in the case has been identified as Nanao of Yairipok.
He had sold a mobile handset along with two SIM cards to Nando in July 2011 .
The other involved in the case is one Bali, a PLA convict, who gave a mobile handset to Nando in March 2011, the SP said.
IK Muivah said the sneaking of mobile phone in the jail is possible due to absence of mobile jamming equipment while drawing the attention of the authority to address the lapse at the earliest.
