Imphal, September 01 2012:
While urging the state government for proper maintenance of the road from Pallel to Chandel Hospital road at the earliest possible, ADC Chandel has pressed for a policy to support the farmers in the district who are in a dilemma whether their fields would bear paddy or not due to lack of proper irrigation facilities.
Talking to Hueiyen Lanpao, Executive Member of Chandel ADC S Mohring contended that the living condition of the people in Chandel district is today in its worst condition as compared to other hill districts.
"Apart from poor road connectivity, people in Chandel district today suffer from lack of electricity supply, water drinking, healthcare and education.
Moreover, the people of the district have not received any benefits under various developmental schemes of the government including PMGSY", Mohring said.
He pointed out that the Water Supply at Maha Area has not been functioning for the last 5 years.
Earlier, it used to supply water to more than 30 villages and Family Quarters of various departments in the district.
Moreover, there is inadequate equipment or doctor in Chandel District Hospital.
There is also the problem for mobile network in the area, thus making it difficult for the people to communicate with their near and dear ones staying far away from home.
Mohring further alleged that absence of DLOs at their respective offices has resulted in slowing down the pace of development in the district.
There is no staff in the government offices at Mahei, Tengnoupal, Moreh, Khengjoy, Chakpikarong, etc.
With regard to the uncertainty of the farmers in the district, Mohring observed that following shotage of rainfall this time, the poor farmers have to get water pump sets on hire to irrigate their fields.
However, there is still uncertainty over whether their fields would bear paddy or not.
Since the government has not declared drought, what is the policy of the government to ameliorate the suffering of the farmers in case of crop failure?, he questioned.
