Imphal, September 01 2012:
Kicking off the month-long 116th Jananeta Irawat Birth Anniversary observance, Secretary of CPI Manipur State Council Dr M Nara has called for imbibing the ideologies of Jananeta Irawat for bringing about necessary corrections in the present society.
Being organised under the aegis of Irawat Celebration Committee (ICC), the month-long observance was inaugurated at Rupmahal Theatre here today in the presence of Moirangthem Ibohal, who had worked with Irawat.
Speaking at the occasion, Dr Nara observed that the birth anniversary of Irawat is being observed throughout the month of September every year because this is the month of struggle for the people of Manipur.
He went on to say that even if the pace of development in the present society is said to be moving very fast, it has not yet been able to eradicate poverty from our midst.
In fact, the gap between the haves and have-nots is ever widening.
So, we need to understand and appreciate the sacrifices made by Irawat for bringing about an egalitarian society.
But it is sad to see that muscle and money power continue to remain dominant even in the Panchayat election with every candidate employing every means to woo the voters.
How can we expect that these candidates would be working for the welfare of the people when they are elected?, he questioned, while cautioning the people to understand the fact that it is the people themselves who would suffer the most on account of any faulty policies of the elected government.
Former Agriculture Minister and ICC president P Parijat, who was also present on the occasion, pointed out that numerous crises have gripped the political firmament of India today.
Demands have been raised for resignation of the Prime Minister over coal scam and Parliament sessions have not been able to proceed without any disruption.
So, looking at the prevailing political scenario, speculations are doing the round over possible mid-term elections.
The current situation in the state demands the same great movements of the past and it is the right time that the people take up such movements, Parijat urged. He also urged to take up intense movement during the month-long birthday celebration of Irawat and join hands together with all the farmers in the state.
N Mangi and L Iboyaima, both secretariat members of CPI Manipur, and L Sotinkumar, general secretary, All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC), Manipur amongst others were also present at the event.
