JD(U) withdraws support from Biren Govt

Imphal, September 12 2022: Janata Dal-United (JD-U) has withdrawn its support from the coalition Government led by Chief Minister N Biren.

Speaking to media persons at their Keishamthong Hodam Leirak Machin office today, JD(U) State unit president Ksh Biren made a formal announcement regarding the party's withdrawal from the BJP-led Government.

Ksh Biren said that JD (U) vice-president O Nabakishore, Dr Kh Loken, Dr Nimaichand Luwang and himself went to Raj Bhavan today and submitted a letter to the Governor informing about the party's withdrawal of support from the BJP-led Government.

Governor La Ganesan reportedly told the JD(U) that their letter of withdrawal of support would be forwarded to the Chief Minister and the Manipur Legislative Assembly Speaker.

On being enquired if the JD (U) was contemplating any course of action against the five MLAs who defected and joined BJP recently, Ksh Biren said that they were awaiting legal opinions.

Although six MLAs were elected on JD (U) ticket in the 12th Manipur Legislative Assembly election, only Abdul Nasir is left with the party at present as five of them have defected to BJP.

JD(U) State unit extended unconditional support when a BJP-led Government was formed in the State.

Notably, JD(U) and BJP were allies at the Centre at that time.

A National level conference of JD(U) was held at Patna on August 9 and the conference unanimously agreed that JD(U) should sever ties with NDA.

After JD(U) severed ties with NDA at the Centre, an executive meeting of JD(U) State unit was held on September 10 and the meeting resolved to withdraw support from the N Biren-led State Government, Ksh Biren said.

He announced that former Minister Dr Nimaichand Luwang has been appointed chief coordinator (political affairs) of JD(U) State unit.

Even though the five MLAs have defected to BJP, there is no expectation that they would bring any significant political change, Dr Nimaichand Luwang said.

Their defection would not weaken the party in any manner.

On the contrary, BJP would not be able to secure majority in the Lok Sabha election of 2024, he said.

He went on to claim that non-BJP alliance would win majority and form the next Government at the Centre.

At one point of time, there was not a single MLA of BJP and no one was willing to fight elections on BJP ticket.

But today, BJP has become very strong while Congress which was once the strongest political party in the country has been witnessing a downfall.

These are the changes brought by time, Dr Nimaichand continued.

Saying that India would see a big political change, he informed that a framework is being charted out to forge a grand alliance of non-BJP political parties and Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar would play a pivotal role the grand alliance and also in ousting BJP from power.

Although BJP formed Government in 2017 here, it did not win majority.

They formed the Government forcibly after coercing and luring some Congress MLAs, Dr Nimaichand added.
