A village chief and a van driver have been physically assaulted by suspected cadres of the KRA, a party to the tripartite SoO pact, with the State and Union Governments.
Zangchom (65), chief of L Songtun village, Senapati district and van driver Khaineipao of Leilon village, who was hired by the village chief were waylaid by suspected KRA cadres from Leimakhong and thrashed severely at about 6.30 pm yesterday.
Zangchom who is also chairman of the Leilon Area Chiefs' Association sustained grievous injuries and was admitted to RIMS last night.
It is reported that the village chief and the van driver were waylaid at Leimakhong and taken to a nearby village where they were set free after a severe thrashing.
Some women who moved to the village to rescue the village chief and the driver were also physically assaulted accusing the duo of attacking them (KRA cadres), said the villagers who are attending to Zangchom at RIMS.
It is reported that the KRA demanded Rs 30,000 from the village chief sometime back against which Rs 23,000 was given.
The family members maintained that the village chief was assaulted for not giving the full amount.
