In a major breakthrough, troops of 27 Sector Assam Rifles under the aegis of 57 Mountain Division have busted a pre-paid SIM card racket at Singhat in Churachandpur.
In a statement, the Army spokesman said that 30 AR personnel caught a person from Mizoram carrying 58 activated Aircel prepaid SIM cards at Singhat.
The man is identified as John Lalrinthara.
The SIM cards were activated under fake names and were being smuggled into Mizoram, said the Army spokesman.
On further investigations, the final link was traced to one Md Khasim Ali of Kwakta, who deals in recharge coupons and SIM cards, said the statement.
During the search of his premises, 455 filled and blank forms and 30 different rubber stamps were recovered.
The SIM cards were sold by Ali for Rs 60 each to Madhinga of Churachandpur to be sold at a much higher rate in Mizoram.
All the seized items have been handed over to police for further investigation.
The Army spokesman said that such SIM cards may be used by militants.
