A book on Chengjapao Doungel, one of the heroic figures in the Kuki Rising of 1917-1919, written by Thangkhongul Doungel was released today at Kuki Inn here.
The book releasing function was graced by MLA Thangkholun Haokip, ex-MP Holkhomang Haokip and Tongkhothang Kipgen, secretary of Sadar Hills Chiefs' Association as the chief guest, president and guest of honour respectively.
The programme was organised by Chengjapao Book Release Committee.
Sketching the life history of freedom fighter Chengjapao Doungel on the occasion, chairman of Kuki War Memorial Committee, Paokhohang Haokip said Chengjapao was born in 1868 at Aisan village.
He was the son of the village chief, Helkhup Doungel.
His chiefdom was spread across Ukhrul's Chingai Subdivision, Somra Tract in Burma and Poturi region of Nagaland.
Paokhohang said, the reign of Chengjapao marked the most peaceful time in Ukhrul district.
As such he had earned name and respect among the village chiefs then.
Even the British had given him the epithet, 'the Kuki Raja'.
Chengjapao led the Kukis in fighting the British after their land was under British subjugation.
He was imprisoned at Sadya Island by the British for rising against them.
The book release function was graced by former minister C Doungel and various other chiefs and leaders of the Kuki community.
