Subsequent to its introduction in Imphal West, a smart card based registration and driving license facilities of the transport department was inaugurated today at the District Transport office here.
Minister in-charge of the district, T Phungzathang Tonsing graced the inaugural function as chief guest while his cabinet colleague TN Haokip and transport minister L Jayantakumar Singh also attended the function.
Speaking on the occasion, Minister Tonsing and Haokip hailed efforts of the department in instituting the second such facility in the state here, while transport minister Jayantakumar credited rapid growth in the number of vehicles as reason for selecting the district to be the second beneficiary of such facility.
Local transport officials presented newly introduced smart card based licenses to the guests, including the deputy commissioner Jacintha Lazarus during the function.
Though the smart cards were handed over in ceremonial manner, it was intended to highlight as well that the district was fully equipped and ready for the new facility.
Jayantakumar, who is also the education minister handed over a couple of fire extinguisher each for all government schools in the district in an attempt to better equip government run educational institutions in dealing with emergencies.
Power Minister Phungzathang also attended the silver jubilee celebration of 'Bungmual Weekly News' (BWN) at Bungmual moments after the function at the transport office.
A village based weekly, the BWN was primarily an important source of information for the 800 plus residents of Bungmual area since its inception in mid 1980s.
