Imphal, June 27 2015 :
The All Manipur Nupi Marup (AMNM) has urged the State Government to formulate a separate law for protection of women from various crimes during the ongoing State Assembly session.
Addressing media persons at Manipur Press Club today, AMNM president M Sakhi said that it was very unfortunate that crimes against wom- en have increased considerably in the last two to three years.
However, only a handful of the perpetrators of these crimes have been booked.
In 2012, 304 cases of crimes against women were recorded while in 2014 the number was declined to 283.This year 30 cases of crime against women and children have been recorded so far and it has been steadily rising, she added.
Rise of such cases clearly indicated that there is a large loophole in the implementation of various laws and law enforcing agencies are not sincere enough in discharging their duties, she alleged.
She added that the three women legislators should know the sentiments of the women of the State and work accordingly.
Further the AMNM will take up the issues which the women of the State have been facing right now with the National Commission for Women.
The issue of AFSPA, highway protection and other issues will be taken up with the concerned authorities of the Central Government.
Meanwhile, Imphal City secretary of AMNM, Indrani appealed to all the parents monitor behaviour of their children closely in order to prevent various crimes which are happening unabated.
"Parents should take an active role in giving moral education to their children but concealing their criminal acts from the society will only worsen the scenario," she added.
Formed in 1940, the AMNM is one of the oldest women organisation of the State and it has been working relentlessly for the welfare of women, Indrani said.
