Imphal, June 27 2015 :
All Manipur Nupi Marup (AMNP) has made a fervent appeal to the three women legislators of Manipur on Saturday to raise the issue of crime against women and children during the ongoing monsoon session of the State Assembly.
The three women MLAs, O Landhoni and Nemcha Kipgen and Social Welfare Minister AK Mirabai are urged to do the needful to handle the ever increasing crime against women and children in the State, demanded AMNP president Maisnam Shakhi at a press meet at Manipur Press Club.
She stated that women and children are the victims of most crimes committed in Manipur and that as many as 304 crimes were recorded in 2012 alone.
In 2013, altogether 283 such crimes were registered, while in 2014 the number was extremely high, Shakhi said.
She said 30 women and children were murdered in January 2015 and every month, that is, the period from February to May this year witnessed five women or children being tortured.
Shakhi demanded that the State Government come out with an appropriate policy to check the crimes.
The authority is not keen to punish those individuals involved in such crimes, which is the major contributing factor to the increased crimes against women and children.
However, she cited that as of now, punishment has been awarded by courts to three IRB personnel who gang-raped a dried chilli seller and two youths for sexually assaulting a young student of TG Higher Secondary School, Imphal.
