Imphal, December 26 2021:
The Communist Party of India (CPI), Manipur State Council has announced the first phase of names of the candidates who would represent the party in the 2022 Assembly elections.
RK Amusana from Khurai Sajor Leikai and Yengkhom (N) Roma Devi from Kakching Sumaang Leikai are the two candidates who have made it to the list in the first phase of announcement.
They would contest the elections at their respective Constituencies on a CPI ticket.
Speaking to media persons at Irawat Bhawan, CPI Manipur State Council state secretary L Sotinkumar said that the party will not field candidates at all Constituencies for the ensuing Assembly election.
Continuing that CPI will field its candidates after closely examining the ground situation, Sotinkumar said that the Left party will ally with democratic and secular political parties which can defeat BJP to form the next Government.
Using undemocratic means and flexing muscle and money power by certain parties including BJP to gain or stay in power is truly unfortunate, Sotinkumar said and added that installation of a democratic and secular Government which will work under the ambit of the Constitution is the need of the hour to save Manipur.
CPI National executive member, Dr M Nara said that there is visible change in the State's political landscape in the run up to the 12th Assembly election.
Cautioning that the intensity of flag and poster campaign being carried out in the State might evoke more violence when the election is near, Dr Nara claimed that certain intending candidates might have already spent crores of rupees in flag and poster campaigns alone.
Appealing to all candidates and their supporters to obey the laws so as to ensure free and fair election, Dr Nara expressed that the 12th Assembly elections might witness a series of regrettable events.
Dr Nara also stressed on the need to reform the electoral system of the country to abolish corruption and check poll related violence.
Continuing that political scenario in contemporary Manipur is very complex as more and more legislators and intending candidates focus on political opportunism, Dr Nara continued that CPI will extend its full support to a democratic and secular political party which can serve the people better.
The CPI will not support candidates who switch allegiance randomly, he added.
