Imphal, December 26 2021:
While strongly condemning the poll violence-related incident in Heirok AC, Manipur Peoples' Democratic Front (MPDF) secretary Sapam Samungou has demanded strict punishment of those involved in the incident at the earliest.
Addressing a press meet at Manipur Press Club here on Sunday, Samungou said that the state government must take the responsibility of the incident, while further demanding the law enforcing agencies to present the exact report detailing the incident to the court concerned to award befitting punishment to those involved under Section 302 and 307 of IPC.
He stressed the need for setting an example with the punishment to prevent similar incident from happening in other constituencies.
The MPDF secretary then said that if the state government is unable to punish the guilty and maintain the law-and-order situation in the state, then President's Rule should be imposed.
The Union government should also pay close attention to the rising spate of poll violence-related incidents in the state, he demanded.
Samungou then said that that election is a time when the people (voters) are given the opportunity to exercise their right to vote and elect a representative of their choice.
No one should intentionally try to use violent means for the sake of winning election, he stressed.
