Govt urged to evict encroachers from Kharungpat

Citizens' Association for Rural Development (CARD), Wabagai has urged the state government to take up steps for the conservation of Kharungpat and evict encroachers from the water body.
In a release, CARD secretary stated that Kharungpat has been recognised as a wetland of importance under RAMSAR site by central and state governments in May 2009.Despite this, some private individuals in collusion with well-connected people have been encroaching and attempting to destroy the water body.
Welcoming the recent initiative of present BJP government to evict encroachers from government land, the Association appealed to the government to preserve the 1600 paris (approximately 1600 hectares) of the lake located in Kakching district.
The Association had submitted a memorandum to the chief minister on April 18 in this regard, but so far no concrete measures have been taken, the secretary rued and urged authority concerned to look into the matter.
