Imphal, May 04 2022:
The police department has suspended SI Jitendro, who was involved in an alleged 'custodial death' of a man over gold debt even as the JAC formed against the incident has demanded the government to conduct a judicial enquiry and take up appropriate actions.
The suspension order of the sub-inspector was issued by Imphal West SP Ksh Shivakanta on May 2 and asked the SI to stay in Imphal during his suspension.
Police sources said that SDPO Imphal is investigating the incident and the SI went missing for some time.
However, he surrendered to SP Imphal West on Wednesday evening.
Mention may be made here that the victim, Arambam Nanao (37) son of late Dhananjoy of Sagolband Kangabam Leikai was reportedly arrested by police in plain clothes on May 2 over some gold debt.
He was brought to his house by police in the afternoon and he allegedly collapsed leading to his death.
Family members alleged police atrocities as the cause of his death.
His body is still lying at RIMS mortuary pending for postmortem.
A couple of videos which purportedly show a countered version of the incident also went viral on social media on Wednesday.
Police said that the real reason for his death will be confirmed only after conducting post mortem examination.
Meanwhile, the JAC formed against the incident came to the CM's bungalow on Wednesday demanding judicial enquiry and befitting punishment of all those responsible for the death of Nanao.
However, they returned without submitting their memorandum as the chief minister was out of station.
Interacting with the media, JAC advisor Laishram Memma accused SI Jitendro of misusing power stating that he is responsible for the death of Nanao.
She also demanded police to disclose the name of the complainant on whose behalf the police misused their power.
She further demanded the government to provide a suitable government job to Nanao's widow, who is left with her three children including a one and half month old baby.
The JAC will not claim the body until their demands are met, she added.
